We are seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated Greenhouse Manager to oversee greenhouse operations including plant production, care, customer service, merchandising, inventory management, purchasing, vendor relations, and staff leadership.
Position Overview:
The Greenhouse Manager oversees the daily operations of the greenhouse department, ensuring healthy plant inventory, effective workflows, strong merchandising, customer engagement, and consistent product quality. This role requires hands-on greenhouse production knowledge, strong organizational and leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage staff, facility operations, irrigation, and chemical applications in a retail environment.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage, schedule, and supervise full-time and seasonal greenhouse staff.
- Train and mentor team members in greenhouse production, plant care, customer service, and operational procedures.
- Use operating software for scheduling, inventory tasks, and workflow coordination.
- Oversee the care and maintenance of greenhouse crops including annuals, tropicals, and specialty plants.
- Perform routine plant maintenance such as watering, spacing, grooming, fertilizing, and health monitoring.
- Safely apply pesticides and chemicals in accordance with industry and State of Ohio regulations.
- Maintain and operate greenhouse environmental controls, heating/cooling systems, and irrigation systems.
- Organize greenhouse layout, displays, and merchandising to reflect seasonal priorities and company standards.
- Manage purchasing and inventory planning for greenhouse products and crops.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships to ensure quality and availability of plant material.
- Assist with marketing through displays, promotions, and featured product selections.
- Provide expert horticultural advice and assist customers with greenhouse-related questions and plant selections.
- Complete sales transactions following company procedures.
- Perform general facility upkeep and operational tasks to maintain greenhouse functionality.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and well-organized work environment.
- Work weekends and extended hours during peak seasons as required.
Qualifications & Skills
- Associate degree in Horticulture preferred, with emphasis on greenhouse crops, annuals, and tropicals; or equivalent experience as a greenhouse grower.
- General & Greenhouse State of Ohio Pesticide Applicator’s License (or ability to obtain).
- 3–5 years of horticultural sales experience in the garden center or greenhouse industry.
- Hands-on experience in greenhouse operations and plant production.
- Familiarity with pest and disease identification and effective treatment solutions.
- Strong leadership abilities with the capability to motivate and guide team members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills
- Strong organizational skills for greenhouse layout, merchandising, and inventory management.
- Flexibility to work 40 hours per week, with seasonal increases to 50–55 hours during peak periods.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and humidity levels inside greenhouses.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing physically demanding tasks.
